What is the CSTP project on mission-oriented innovation policies to adress societal challenges?
Governments in several countries experiment systemic policies (aka 'new' mission-oriented policies) to strategically steer research and innovation activities and make significant progress towards addressing societal challenges of unprecedented scale and scope (citizens health and wellbeing, ageing populations, climate change, etc.).
The OECD's project aims to :

What are mission-oriented innovation policies to address societal challenges?
Mission-oriented policies are comprehensive packages of coordinated research and innovation policy measures focused one specific challenge:
CIIE-CSTP joint workshop on
“Reorienting STI Policies and Funding to Tackle Societal Challenges”
A CIIE-CSTP joint workshop on “Reorienting STI Policies and Funding to Tackle Societal Challenges” was held on October 16. The focus of the workshop was on Mission-oriented policies as a way for governments to better and more effectively orientate and coordinate STI resources to improve sustainability.
Following a keynote speech by Wolfgang Polt, roundtable gathered policy-makers involved in the development and implementation of four overarching national mission initiatives:

Joint OECD/BMVIT Workshop - “Mission-Oriented Policies: Moving from guiding principles to implementation”
On the 27 September, the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and OECD jointly organised a workshop on “Mission-Oriented Policies: Moving from guiding principles to implementation” in Vienna.
The objective of the workshop were to present the analytical framework underpinning the OECD project and discuss the derived tools for the fieldwork. This was an important milestone in the project that allowed consolidating the ground for the empirical phase.
It gathered more 50 participants: members of the project steering group, policy makers from Austria and other OECD countries who have concrete experience in implementing mission-oriented innovation policy, selected academic and experts in the field.
Many thanks to the BMVIT team for a insightful event, in a friendly and effective atmosphere!
The CSTP high-level roundtable first session focused on the following question : Are mission-oriented programmes an efficient way for government to influence research and innovation?
